Nestled just eleven miles south of Uptown Charlotte, Pineville, North Carolina, is one of Mecklenburg County’s oldest and most historically significant communities.      Long before the town was officially incorporated, the area was known as Morrow’s Turnout, a busy crossroads where two major Native American trading paths intersected. The expansive meadows surrounding the settlement provided an ideal location for traders and travelers to rest livestock, making it one of the region’s most important mule trading centers during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. As stagecoaches began traveling through the Carolinas, Morrow’s Turnout became a natural stopping point for passengers making the journey between communities. When the Charlotte & Columbia Railroad arrived in 1852, the town entered a new era of economic opportunity. Around that same time, the community adopted the name Pineville, inspired by the towering pine forests that covered the surrounding landscape, and the town was officially incorporated in 1873.

     Pineville also holds a unique place in American history as the birthplace of James K. Polk, the eleventh President of the United States. Although his original home no longer stands, the nearby historic site preserves the story of his early life through reconstructed log buildings, exhibits, and educational programs. The presidential historic site remains one of North Carolina’s most important historical attractions and serves as a reminder of Pineville’s deep roots in our nation’s history. Throughout the late nineteenth century, Pineville grew into a prosperous agricultural and textile community. Cotton farming, mule trading, and manufacturing supported the local economy, while the Dover Yarn Mill—later known as Cone Mill—became one of the area’s largest employers. By the early 1900s, Pineville had become the largest town outside of Charlotte in Mecklenburg County.

     Like many Southern mill towns, Pineville experienced slower growth during the Great Depression and the decline of the textile industry. Yet its location ultimately positioned it for remarkable success. The construction of Interstate 485, the continued expansion of Charlotte, and the opening of Carolina Place Mall transformed Pineville into one of the region’s premier retail and commercial destinations. What was once a quiet railroad community has become a thriving suburb that blends historic charm with modern convenience. Today, Pineville continues to preserve its walkable downtown while welcoming new businesses, restaurants, healthcare facilities, hotels, and residential communities.
