Pineville, North Carolina: A Historic Railroad Town That Became the Gateway to South Charlotte

It was around this period that Morrow’s Turnout became known as Pineville, a name inspired by the large pine forests that once covered much of the surrounding landscape. Pineville was officially incorporated in 1873, establishing a municipal identity that has survived enormous changes in Mecklenburg County during the century and a half that followed. The Town of Pineville continues to identify its early role as a mule trading center, stagecoach stop, and railroad community as central parts of its history.

James K. Polk and Pineville’s Place in American History

Pineville holds a distinctive place in American history as the birthplace of James K. Polk, the eleventh President of the United States. Polk was born in 1795 on land near what is now Pineville, and although the original Polk family home no longer survives, the President James K. Polk State Historic Site preserves the history of his early life and the larger world of the Carolina backcountry during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The historic site stands on land that was once owned by Polk’s parents and includes reconstructed period buildings such as a log house, kitchen, and other structures furnished to illustrate the type of environment in which the Polk family lived. The visitor center contains exhibits dealing with Polk’s family, life, and presidency, providing Pineville with a historical attraction of importance well beyond Mecklenburg County.

The presence of the Polk site is especially interesting because the modern surroundings are so different from the rural landscape that existed when Polk was born. Lancaster Highway, Interstate 485, shopping centers, medical offices, hotels, apartments, and neighborhoods now occupy land that would have been almost unrecognizable to residents of eighteenth-century Mecklenburg County. The historic site therefore provides more than a connection to a former president. Mule trading remained part of the local economy, and manufacturing gradually became more important as textile production expanded throughout the Carolinas. The Dover Yarn Mill, later associated with Cone Mill, became one of Pineville’s most significant industrial employers and by the early twentieth century employed more than 200 people. By 1903, Pineville had approximately 700 residents and was described as the largest town in Mecklenburg County outside Charlotte, a remarkable distinction for a community that today sits almost entirely within the much larger urban environment surrounding North Carolina’s largest city.

Like many textile and agricultural communities throughout the South, Pineville experienced slower growth as the regional economy changed, particularly during and following the Great Depression. The contrast between the older downtown streets and the modern commercial corridors around Carolina Place and Interstate 485 is part of what makes Pineville unusual. The town has become highly developed without completely surrendering the small-town identity that existed generations before Charlotte expanded around it.

Pineville Today: A Small Town in the Middle of a Major Metropolitan Area

Modern Pineville offers residents and visitors an unusual combination of small-town identity and metropolitan convenience. The official 2020 Census counted 10,602 residents, while the U.S. Census Bureau estimated Pineville’s population had grown to approximately 11,567 by July 2024, an increase of roughly 9 percent from the 2020 population base. Census data also indicates that approximately 44.9 percent of Pineville residents age 25 and older hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, while the Town of Pineville lists the community’s median age at approximately 36.3 years.

Those numbers only tell part of the Pineville story because the town serves a much larger population during the average day.
