The History of Monroe, North Carolina

     Monroe’s history dates back to the early nineteenth century. Union County was established in 1842 from portions of Mecklenburg and Anson counties, creating a need for a centrally located county seat. The new community was named Monroe in honor of President James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States.  Agriculture quickly became the area’s economic foundation.
