Lincolnton and the county around it played important roles in the American Revolution, early North Carolina manufacturing, iron production, agriculture and the development of the Southern textile industry, and much of that history can still be seen around the courthouse square, the South Fork River and the older neighborhoods surrounding downtown.

The Early History of Lincolnton and Lincoln County

Lincoln County was established in 1779 and named for Major General Benjamin Lincoln, commander of the Southern Department of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The original county was enormous by modern standards, encompassing roughly 1,800 square miles and including territory that would eventually become all or portions of present day Lincoln, Gaston, Catawba and Cleveland counties. Lincolnton itself did not yet exist as the county seat, but the surrounding backcountry had already been attracting settlers who established farms, mills, churches, trading routes and small communities throughout the western Piedmont. 

Only a year after the county was created, the surrounding countryside became the setting for one of the more remarkable and less widely remembered battles of the American Revolution. On June 20, 1780, Patriot militia and Loyalist forces fought the Battle of Ramsour’s Mill on a hillside near what is now Lincolnton. Local accounts describe approximately one thousand Loyalists confronting a much smaller Patriot force of roughly four hundred men, with heavy casualties on both sides. The battle was especially bitter because many of the combatants came from the same region, turning the conflict into the literal division of neighbors, friends and in some cases families. 

The Patriot victory became strategically important because it disrupted Loyalist support in the North Carolina backcountry during the Southern Campaign. Today the battle is remembered at Battleground Park, where annual commemorations have included battlefield tours, living history demonstrations, period encampments, wreath laying ceremonies and interpretation of the people who fought there. The city continues to regard Ramsour’s Mill as one of the defining events in Lincolnton’s early history. 

Lincolnton Becomes the County Seat

Lincolnton was formally established as the county seat on December 29, 1785. The town was laid out around a central courthouse square, with East Main Street, West Main Street, North Aspen Street and South Aspen Street extending outward and dividing the original settlement into quadrants. More than two centuries later, that basic street pattern still shapes downtown Lincolnton, which is one reason the center of the city feels distinctly older than the suburban commercial districts surrounding many communities closer to Charlotte. 

As settlement accelerated throughout the North Carolina backcountry, Lincoln County became both populous and economically important. By 1840, it was among the largest and most populated counties in the state and was a leading producer of wheat, orchard products, dairy products, cotton and livestock. Agriculture was only part of the story, because the region was also developing an unusually diverse manufacturing economy for an inland Southern county. 

Iron production became particularly important. Forges and furnaces had been established throughout the western Piedmont during the late eighteenth century, and by 1849 Lincoln County led North Carolina’s iron industry, producing castings, bar iron and wrought iron tools. Sawmills, gristmills, tanneries, potteries and other small manufacturing operations added to an economy that was becoming considerably more sophisticated than the image of a purely agricultural frontier community might suggest. 

Lincolnton and the Beginning of Southern Textile Manufacturing

One of the most historically significant industrial developments around Lincolnton occurred around 1813, when Michael Schenck established what the City of Lincolnton describes as the first successful textile mill south of New England. After the original operation was destroyed by flooding in 1816, Schenck joined James Bivens and John Hoke in constructing a larger facility known as Lincoln Cotton Mills along the South Fork of the Catawba River. That operation continued until the Civil War. 

The historical importance of textile manufacturing around Lincolnton is still reflected in state historical markers, including one recognizing the Schenck Warlick Mill as the first cotton mill in North Carolina. Manufacturing eventually became woven into the economic identity of this entire part of the Carolina Piedmont, long before the large textile complexes that later transformed Gaston County and other communities closer to Charlotte.  By the middle of the nineteenth century, Lincolnton itself had become a busy local center for government, commerce and professional services. The city history records attorneys, physicians, hotels, merchants, grocers, tailors, blacksmiths, coach makers, cabinetmakers, saddlers, shoemakers and other trades operating around town by the 1840s. 

That period of regional dominance did not last unchanged. Cleveland County was created from part of Lincoln County in 1841, Catawba County followed in 1842 and Gaston County was formed in 1846. Those divisions reduced Lincoln County from approximately 1,800 square miles to a little over 300 square miles and transferred significant farmland, population and industrial sites into the newly created counties. Lincolnton’s growth slowed considerably during much of the remainder of the nineteenth century. 

The Textile Era and the Growth of Modern Lincolnton

The beginning of the twentieth century brought another major period of expansion. Textile mills again became powerful economic engines, taking advantage of the South Fork River, regional rail connections and a growing Southern manufacturing economy. Lincolnton’s population increased from only 828 residents in 1900 to 2,413 in 1910 and 3,390 by 1920, while brick commercial buildings increasingly replaced earlier frame structures around the courthouse square. 

The courthouse that now dominates Court Square came from this period of confidence and growth. Construction began in 1921, and the three story Classical Revival building was completed in 1923. It became the fifth courthouse serving Lincoln County since Lincolnton was established as the county seat and remains one of downtown’s most recognizable landmarks.  Lincolnton’s textile economy, like those throughout the Carolinas, would eventually contract as manufacturing patterns changed, but the industrial history never disappeared from the physical landscape. Old mill buildings, the South Fork River, historic commercial structures and former manufacturing sites remain important pieces of the city’s identity.

Perhaps the best example of old industrial Lincolnton finding an entirely different modern purpose is The Laboratory Mill, a historic mill property along the South Fork River that is now one of the area’s best known wedding venues. The property describes itself as having more than two hundred years of history and retains exposed heart pine beams, original hardwood flooring, brick walls and river views, while operating as a climate controlled wedding and event venue only about four miles from downtown Lincolnton. Lincolnton Today

Modern Lincolnton remains a comparatively small city, but it is growing. The United States Census Bureau estimated the population at 12,465 in 2025, up approximately 12.5 percent from the 2020 population base, which represents meaningful growth for a community of its size. Current Census estimates place median household income at approximately $46,320 and per capita income at approximately $30,456. 

Those income figures also make it important not to misrepresent Lincolnton as another wealthy Lake Norman suburb. It is not. Lincolnton remains a traditional county seat with working class roots, manufacturing employment, older neighborhoods, rural surroundings and a relatively affordable housing market. At the same time, population growth, new housing construction and Charlotte’s continued expansion are gradually changing the city and the larger Lincoln County market.

Downtown Lincolnton has also developed an identity that is no longer entirely dependent on government offices or traditional retail. Historic buildings have been adapted for restaurants and other businesses, a craft brewery and restaurant movement has contributed to redevelopment, and the Cloninger Rail Trail passes through the heart of downtown as part of the Carolina Thread Trail system. The city has also developed access to the South Fork River and incorporated public art, murals and Catawba Valley pottery traditions into the downtown landscape. 

That combination gives Lincolnton something many rapidly built suburban communities cannot manufacture very easily: an actual historic center with more than two centuries of continuity, surrounded by a city that is still changing.

Lincolnton Economy and Regional Employment

Lincoln County continues to have a substantial manufacturing base, although the industries are now very different from the cotton mills and iron furnaces that drove the nineteenth century economy. The Lincoln County Economic Development Association identifies major area employers that include American Woodmark, The Timken Company, Blum, Cataler North America, Robert Bosch Tool Corporation, LeeBoy and other manufacturing and industrial companies, alongside retail, education, healthcare and public sector employment. 

This industrial base creates a legitimate corporate transportation market that may not be obvious from Lincolnton’s size alone. Engineers, managers, suppliers, consultants and visiting executives can be arriving through Charlotte Douglas International Airport and traveling onward to Lincoln County facilities, while local executives may need transportation from Lincolnton to CLT, Uptown Charlotte, SouthPark or meetings elsewhere in the region.

Lincolnton is also positioned between several separate economic areas. Charlotte and Gastonia lie to the southeast, Hickory is to the north, Lake Norman and Denver are to the east, and US 321 provides a direct north and south route through much of the region. That geography allows Lincolnton to remain distinctly its own community while still participating in a much larger employment and travel market.

Lincolnton Neighborhood and Residential Growth Spotlight

Lincolnton does not have a single enormous luxury development that defines the housing market, and describing the city that way would be inaccurate. Higher value homes are more dispersed throughout the 28092 area, often appearing as custom homes on larger parcels, established properties close to town or newer construction outside the original city grid. Current real estate listings include properties above the million dollar range, including custom homes and large acreage properties, but those homes represent one segment of a much broader market rather than the typical Lincolnton residence.

One of the more notable new communities is Huntington Hills, where True Homes is developing semi custom houses only a few miles from downtown Lincolnton. Current plans include homes approaching 4,900 square feet, which makes the community considerably different from the small mill houses historically associated with portions of the city. 

Carpenter Farms is another significant new development, with multiple home collections and neighborhood amenities including a pool, cabana, dog park, playground and activity field. The community is only a few miles from downtown and has convenient access to the South Fork River and Cloninger Rail Trail, which shows how Lincolnton’s newer residential growth is beginning to connect suburban style development with the city’s older historic core. Clark Creek Landing adds another new construction option, while higher end custom homes appear in smaller pockets and on individual acreage throughout the Lincolnton area. One example is Quinlan Estates, where current listings include custom homes around the million dollar level. The broader point is that Lincolnton’s housing market is becoming more varied rather than simply becoming more expensive.

For transportation purposes, this spread out residential pattern matters because a Lincolnton mailing address can place a passenger in very different surroundings. A residence close to Court Square, a new home at Huntington Hills and a large rural property outside town may all carry a Lincolnton address, but the actual drive time to Charlotte Douglas International Airport can vary meaningfully. 1776CLT therefore schedules transportation according to the exact pickup address rather than estimating every Lincolnton trip from the center of downtown.

A forty five minute theoretical drive is not the same thing as a forty five minute airport schedule. A passenger leaving Lincolnton still has to account for traffic, airline check in, security screening, luggage and the possibility of unexpected congestion. For early morning flights, that may mean a pickup well before sunrise, and those are precisely the trips where reserving transportation ahead of time becomes valuable.

1776CLT does not currently provide removable infant carrier style seats, so parents traveling with a very young infant who specifically requires that type of carrier should plan accordingly. The purpose of being specific about our inventory is to let families know what is actually available rather than making a vague claim that we provide “car seats” and leaving the details until pickup day.

When reserving a Lincolnton trip with child seats, families should provide the child’s age, approximate height and weight so that the appropriate seat can be discussed before the vehicle is prepared. The estate on NC 150 was built beginning in 1970 for fashion designer Alda Crowe and her husband John, with architecture inspired by the appearance of an older Virginia plantation home. Today the property includes more than 9,000 square feet within the mansion, bridal and groom spaces, a terrace and a large covered reception pavilion capable of accommodating major celebrations. Circle M Farm provides a rustic setting built around a renovated farmhouse and barn, combining a rural Lincoln County atmosphere with a venue designed specifically around modern weddings.
